The 49ers could use one more receiver, especially one who would be a deep threat and who could possibly be a punt returner. Michael Crabtree and Anquan Boldin are great receivers, but the 49ers could use more depth at that position.
Boldin is a free agent. Regardless of if they re-sign him or not, they’ll still need another productive wide receiver, given the fact that Boldin is 33 and might not produce at the same level he did this season and the fact that he’s not a deep threat.
Quinton Patton has shown promise but doesn’t have much experience, so he can’t be consistently relied upon as a third receiver yet. Also, although LaMichael James has improved as a punt returner, it’s unclear what his role will be next season, so it’d help the 49ers to have another receiver who could return kicks and punts too.
The 49ers were the 30th ranked passing offense in the NFL ahead of just the New York Jets and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. To improve their passing offense, they need a receiver with a different skillset than Crabtree and Boldin, meaning one who could be a deep threat and possibly a punt returner.
