Entering the 2014 season, one of the San Francisco Giants’ most glaring needs was finding a consistent, everyday second baseman. As of now, the Giants are still looking to fill that need.

The San Francisco Giants’ 2014 season has been an interesting one. They started off the season hot, clicking on all cylinders. Their offense, which has been one of their weaknesses in recent history, was flowing, they were getting clutch hits, they were playing solid defense and executing the fundamentals, and their bullpen was dominant. This led to the best record in baseball for a while.

Then, injuries started to hit. The Giants were able to get through Brandon Belt’s injury at first, but then their offense stalled. Angel Pagan went down. Marco Scutaro was still absent. Matt Cain had a couple trips to the DL. The offense was missing, and wins were hard to find.

The MLB trade deadline is quickly approaching, and the San Francisco Giants have been linked to several starting pitchers around the league. Without much cap flexibility and without many intriguing prospects, the Giants are somewhat strapped and might have a difficult time acquiring a big-name pitcher such as Tampa Bay Rays pitcher David Price, New York Mets pitcher Bartolo Colon, or Philadelphia Philles pitcher Cliff Lee.

However, the idea of the Giants trying to acquire Boston Red Sox pitcher Jake Peavy has started to float around in trade rumors. A trade for Peavy would probably make more sense for the Giants than trying to trade for another starting pitcher for several reasons.

The San Francisco Giants had an odd first half of the season. They experienced being the best team in baseball, and they also experienced a brutally tough downfall. We’ve seen the best of the Giants and how effective and dominating they can be, but we’ve also seen their weaknesses greatly exposed.

The Giants finished the first half of the season with a 52-43 record, and they are currently one game behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. The Giants have a disappointing 28-25 record at home, but they have a pretty solid 24-18 road record.
